Landscaping for Wellness – Fire

In our introduction article of this series, “Landscaping for Wellness”, we gave a brief overview in how landscaping can nourish the mind, body and soul.  This can happen through elements that incorporate sensory experiences and spaces that provide reflecting and meditation opportunities.  Fire has played a key role in the evolution of human beings, with the flicker and crackle of burning logs directly linked to human psychology.

Dr Christopher Lynn, a medical and psychological anthropologist at the University of Alabama, carried out tests on hundreds of volunteers to see how they reacted to fire.  He said: “Hearth and campfires are widely held to influence a relaxation effect. Although the importance of controlled fires in human evolution is indisputable, the relaxation aspect had remained uninvestigated.  The results showed “significant” decreases in blood pressure were associated with the more “naturalistic” conditions. The benefits increased the longer the volunteers watched the fires.

Along with the relaxation and health benefits, fire can also spark your imagination, get your mind in the present, and provide a vehicle for introspection.  Since ancient times, fire has been a symbol of creativity, passion and destruction in various cultures around the globe. There is a reason for that: fire has the power both to create and to destroy. It is these opposing but intertwined forces that make fire incredibly inspiring. Fire has been a major inspiration to artists, writers and musicians for centuries. The next time you’re around a fire, have a pen and paper handy, a sketchbook or your musical instrument of choice. Staring meditatively into the fire can literally “spark” some amazing ideas. Remember to jot them down after you meditate!

There something about the off-rhythm crackle of flames that, if you watch them intently, focuses your mind. Additionally, when in the presence of a fire, you instinctively become more alert.  You can use this state of alertness and attunement to accentuate a wonderful meditation session. Simply sit back and focus on the flames. Relax your breath and consider both your breath and the flicker of the flames around you. Embrace the moment with your body and your mind. When we keep things in perspective and keep our forces unified and ordered, that means growth, passion, creativity and forward movement can occur. When our inner elements are scattered and out of control, a great deal of damage can be done.

Gathering around a fire with friends and loved ones encourages meaningful conversations and fosters a sense of community. The shared experience of observing fire together strengthens social bonds, promoting emotional well-being and a sense of belonging.  A great space such as a built-in firepit ring with Adirondack chairs or a comfy undercover space with cushy outdoor couches and a beautiful fireplace encourages these times to connect with people.

Of course, these benefits can be achieved through natural or propane gas powered firepits and places, which of course, are much easier to start and maintain, but nothing fosters the connection with nature more than a natural wood-burning fire.  This connection fosters a sense of grounding, reminding us of our place in the natural world and providing a respite from the digital distractions of modern life. The smell of wood burning is sharp and earthy. Meditating near a fire, breathing deeply in the presence of this scent can make you feel closer to nature. When you go to bed that night, you’ll smell the smoke in your hair. If you’re like me, you’ll find that it’s wonderfully zen.

In my opinion, every outdoor living space should have a fire feature incorporated into it.  Whether it is just a firepit ring you buy at a big-box store, a separate area with a built-in firepit, or a center-piece fireplace, please consider adding to your landscape to see the wellness benefits.
