On Saturday, November 4th, Thoms Bros. was proud to be apart of the Michigan Green Industry Association’s (MGIA) Day of Service. This year’s recipient was the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) Genesis House II in Detroit (drmm.org).
The Mission began as a soup kitchen that provided church services, shelter, food and clothing for the homeless and downtrodden. It changed locations several times and added services to meet the needs of the ever-changing community. Those services include substance abuse treatment, transitional and permanent housing, job preparation and educational courses.
Genesis House II is an emergency shelter and transitional housing program for families and women with children. Those in this program often working on substance abuse aftercare issues, addressing legal issues, and attend school and training programs to give them a future. For residents who receive shelter and stay overnight, DRMM provides meals and the opportunity to shower and receive new clothing items. Shelter Counselors do an assessment with each resident, encourage and help residents to apply for services and take steps to help them meet long-term needs, and assure that clients receive emergency medical or counseling needs.
Fourteen MGIA member suppliers supplied topsoil, mulch, stones, edging and plantings. While thirteen MGIA member contractors supplied labor and equipment preparing beds, installing materials, trimming trees and providing other horticultural services.

Thoms Bros. provided and installed a Versacourt 4-Square court for the kids of the house to enjoy. Before the Day of Service, kids of the house only had a broken-down swing set to play on outside. Thoms Bros. has been an Authorized Versacourt dealer/installer since 2020. Versacourt offers one of the industry’s most extensive lines of outdoor and indoor sport tile systems. Available in more colors, with more game lines and more accessories, multiple base options and more custom decorating options than virtually anyone in the industry.
