Plants for Fall Color

Its Autumn, and we can just start to see some plants turning color. There are many exciting plants out there that can bring some real spice to your landscaping this time of year. See our selections below:

Bowhall Red Maple – Considered one of the best for early fall color! The glossy green leaves provide a very dynamic show, as they turn a brilliant orange-scarlet when temperatures begin to cool. This large deciduous tree has a pyramidal form when young that becomes rounded with age. A wonderful choice for use as a high profile shade tree in larger landscapes. Fall Fiesta Sugar Maple – Strongly upright pyramidal shape. Densely branched, particularly when young. Develops exfoliating bark at an early age. Mottled brown, green, and tan bark peels off in large plates revealing patches of interior bark in varying shades of cream to white. Norwegian Sunset Maple – A cross between Acer truncatum x Acer platanoides ‘Norwegian Sunset’ it adapts to most soils but grows best in those that are slightly acidic. Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry – This large shrub or small tree grows to about 15-30 ft in height and is as wide as it is tall. Its most outstanding feature is the beautiful white flowers revealed in the spring. Features showy, 5-petaled, slightly fragrant, white flowers in drooping clusters which appear before the leaves emerge in early spring. Finely toothed, elliptic, medium to dark green leaves (1-3″ long) change to orange-red in autumn. Flowers give way to small, round, green berries which turn red and finally mature to a dark purplish-black in early summer. Butterscotch Amsonia – Similar to other Amsonia but with improved form. Abundant clusters of small, powdery blue flowers on reddish stems above a mound of willowy, narrow foliage. The bright green leaves of spring and summer change to dramatic hues of yellow, deep gold and butterscotch in fall. Easy to grow and relatively low maintenance. Autumn Gold Ginkgo Tree – This is a deciduous tree can slowly reach 35′-50′ tall and wide. It is symmetrical in shape thus making it an attractive addition to a park or space with lots of room for growth. New foliage growth is green, fan-shaped and leathery, turning to spectacular gold in fall. It does best in full sun with regular water and more during hot summer days. Fruitless variety. Henry’s Garnet Virginia Sweetspire – Itea virginica is a brilliant late spring early summer bloomer. This elegant arching, 4-6’ tall shrub produces masses of pure white finger-like flower clusters just as the summer heat builds. Henry’s Garnet Virginia sweetspire extends interest as it explodes with garnet red foliage. Though found naturally in moist to wet soils, it can tolerate dry soils as long as they are acidic and well drained. Fire Dragon Maiden Grass – Miscanthus sinensis ‘Fire Dragon’ sets your garden ablaze with upright green foliage that transforms into intensifying colors of red and orange. When the temperature cools, this grass heats up. Soft, silvery plumes and scarlet foliage give ‘Fire Dragon’ a dramatic fire and smoke effect. Swamp White Oak – Although swamp whites were named for their tolerance to poorly drained sites, they can and will thrive or do better on many other site types. The Blaze Bluestem – ‘The Blues’ typically grows 2-4′ tall. Features erect, upright, broom-like clumps of slender leaves (1/4″ wide) which are tinted blue. Pinkish-tinged culms (stems). Foliage acquires burgundy-red tones in autumn. Purplish-bronze flowers appear in 3″ long racemes on branched stems rising above the foliage in August. Flowers give way to clusters of fluffy, silvery-white seed heads which may persist into early winter. Blue foliage and fall color are probably the best ornamental features of this grass. Brandywine Viburnum – Experience the most beautiful berry display in the plant kingdom with this new Viburnum. It delivers loads of breathtaking berries that transform from green to shades of vivid pink and blue.
